WHAT IS BUCCAL FAT REDUCTION?

Some people have a baby face. This means their face is round and full. Buccal fat reduction is an excellent procedure that reduces the amount of fat in your cheeks. It results in a more slender face and tapered appearance. It’s perfect for people with a chipmunk face and fat cheeks.

WHAT’S THE BUCCAL FAT PAD?

This is a brown fat pad underneath our cheekbones. Given the location, it can make the face look round and poorly defined. As we get older, this fat pad also drops on top of our jowls, making the appearance of our jowls more significant. The fat in this location is referred to as brown fat. Unlike the fat in other parts of our body, the buccal fat pad is often resistant to diet, weight loss and exercise.

HOW WILL I LOOK AFTER A BUCCAL FAT REDUCTION?

During the first week following your surgery, your face will look more chubby and full. In fact, it’s very normal to look like a chipmunk the first 3 days after your surgery. After the first several days, your swelling will slowly subside. By the first week after your surgery, your face will look similar to the way it looked prior to surgery. However, as time goes on, you will start to notice your face slowly become more tapered and contoured. By the first month after your surgery, you will notice a very light contour. This refinement will continue for approximately a year after surgery. Your swelling will resolve and your body will dissolve any scar tissue. At a year after surgery, patients are quiet ecstatic about their appearance.

This refinement will continue for approximately a 6-9 months after surgery. Your swelling will resolve and your body will dissolve any scar tissue. At a year after surgery, my patients are ecstatic about their appearance. Their cheekbones will remain in their natural position. Given the reduction of the fat pads underneath the cheekbones, their face will be more tapered.

WILL I LOOK OLD AFTER BUCCAL FAT REDUCTION?

Not if you REDUCE the fat pads. You never want to REMOVE the entire buccal fat pad. Removal causes an unnatural, dramatic hallowing underneath your cheekbones that will make you look old and skeletonized as you age. Although you may be excited to slim your face and taper your jaw appearance, it’s also important to appreciate the other parts of your face. By performing a reduction, Dr. Sofer refines the proportions of your face. By reducing the fat pads, they become in proportion to your cheekbones. This is super important as you continue aging. Your face will age gracefully.

WHAT’S IT LIKE AFTER NECK LIPOSUCTION SURGERY?

Patients often complain of a soreness of the neck muscles, very similar to muscle soreness after a gym workout. You’ll have a compression headwrap in place. It’s important to keep this wrap in place for the first week in order to reduce swelling and help your tissues tighten back up. Following the first week, you can wear the headwrap when sleeping for a month. You won’t have any stitches, so suture removal will not be necessary. Some patients also have bruising, which resolves over the course of a week or two.

Buccal Fat Reduction by Dr. Sofer

There are multiple differences in the manner Dr. Sofer performs this procedure. Dr. Sofer performs a minimally invasive buccal fat reduction, using a very small 5mm incision on each side of your cheeks to reduce the fat pads. Dr. Sofer does not make big incisions. This is so important in reducing scarring and extra swelling. The procedure is also done while you are awake. Dr. Sofer has performed hundreds of buccal fat reductions. He’s very comfortable in doing this procedure while you’re awake. This is very important. Why? First, we don’t want to expose our patients to unneeded anesthesia and its potential complications. Second, by performing this procedure on awake patients, the extra buccal fat pad sticks into the mouth. This allows Dr. Sofer to see the EXTRA fat and remove only this part.

WHAT’S A SAFE AMOUNT OF FAT TO REDUCE?

The amount of fat removed really depends on your exam. After a small incision is made on the insides of your cheeks, all the extra fat the makes your face look chubby pops into your mouth. We usually reduce a portion of this fat. Removal of the complete fat pad will result in premature aging. You don’t want that.

CANI GET THIS PROCEDURE IF I ALREADY HAVE A THIN FACE?

If you already have a slender face, you may still be a candidate for buccal fat reduction. Individuals with a thin face may still have poor definition of their cheekbones and the area over their jaw. Buccal fat reduction is designed to create proportions. Buccal fat reduction performed on a thin face needs to be super conservative. This is extremely important. Just a tiny reduction in the fat pad can achieve a beautiful appearance. Remember, more reduction does not mean more beauty.

HOW MUCH IS A BUCCAL FAT REDUCTION?

The price in the United States ranges from $3,000 to $10,000. In our office, buccal fat reduction is $4,500. The price is our office includes all surgical and facility fees.

SHOULD I GET BUCCAL FAT REDUCTION?

This is a personal decision. It’s great to have the support of friends and loved ones. However, do not get the surgery because others around you want it for you. Ideal candidates for this procedure are individuals with a full face or a round face. Their chubby cheeks or baby cheeks are very often resistant to diet and exercise. Their parents usually also have full chipmunk cheeks. Dr. Sofer will look at photos of your parents and determine the pattern of facial volume loss in your family.

WILL I HAVE PAIN AFTER BUCCAL FAT REDUCTION?

Tenderness in the cheeks for the first 1-2 days is normal. We prescribe you a narcotic to help with this. However, icing is the best form of pain control. The discomfort will resolve  soon after.

WHAT CAN I EAT AFTER SURGERY?

Since you’ll have tiny incisions inside your mouth, you’ll need to be careful with what you eat! You should avoid foods that are too spicy or hot, hard, sharp, or sour for the first 2 weeks after surgery. The reason this is important is because you don’t want to irritate your incisions.
